The comedian shared the story during his monologue on the latest episode of Everybody’s Live
Mulaney explained to the talk show audience that he had been planning a bit where Richard Kind’s (fake) tortoise died and the rap group showed up and played their 1996 single “Tha Crossroads.”
“If you’re not familiar with ‘Tha Crossroads’ it was an enormous hit,” the comedian said, adding, “I cannot overstate how hugely popular it was with horned-up junior high kids at Catholic schools to grind with each other during the Clinton administration.”
To book Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Mulaney and his team reached out to a contact they found online for the band and scheduled a Zoom call with their manager. None of the band members were on the call, but “their manager assures us that they’re really into the idea and want to do it.” Apparently the manager claimed that only four of the five band members would be available for the talk show.
Soon, Mulaney found himself in a back and forth with the manager over money, including the band asking for $2,800 in cash for week-of expenses and pushing for a higher appearance fee upfront. No contract was ever signed and the band didn’t show up.
“Now, I didn’t tell you all this just to air the dirty laundry of what it’s like behind the scenes of a show,” Mulaney said. “Many guests have shaken me down for a couple thousand dollars and then canceled last minute. It happens all the time. I’m telling you about it because I’m genuinely worried. After a little investigating, I have come to believe that the man I was talking to was not the manager of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. In fact, several sites list a different person.”
He urged the members of the band to call in to his show to “clear this up.” He added that he may see at them at an upcoming festival at the Kia Forum and he doesn’t “want things to be awkward.”

“And to him, whomever I was dealing with,” Mulaney concluded, “Sir, first off, credit where credit is due. I do indeed look like someone you could hustle over a booking for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.”
