The cookbook features more than 40 recipes inspired by meals that Paul cooked for his bands and crew over the years
Vinnie Paul may have been best known for his role in popularizing heavy metal music as a member of Pantera, but the drummer and producer was also a celebrated chef, according to friends and family members who attended Paul’s “Sunday Funday” dinners over the years.
Now, some of Paul’s favorite recipes and anecdotes from the grill are collected in one place, with the release of “Drumming Up An Appetite” a new cookbook inspired by the musician’s philosophy of “cooking hostile.”
The new cookbook features more than 40 recipes designed for summer barbecues and family feasts alike, with dishes said to be inspired by meals that Paul cooked for his bands and crew over the years. The 72-page recipe book is broken into three chapters: main courses, side dishes and desserts (the latter chapter is dubbed, “A Vulgar Display of Flour”).
According to publishers Z2, Paul began writing this book more than 15 years ago, long before his passing in 2018. “It’s all about cooking and having fun with it,” reads a quote attributed to the drummer in a press release. “A lot of people think cooking is throwing something in the microwave. It’s something that you’ve really got to be passionate about, just like playing an instrument. If you put your heart and soul into it, and then you feed it to people, and you’re [like], ‘Oh, man! This is so good,’ it makes you feel good. It’s just like playing music; [people say] ‘G-damn, I love this sh*t!’”
In addition to family recipes from the Texas-born Paul, the book features a foreword from his longtime friend Carrot Top, along with full-color photography from Justin Borucki, and graphic novel-style illustrations by Danny Hellman, Steve Chanks, and Rob Schwager. The cover art is by Erik Rodriguez and features a tongue-in-cheek illustration of Paul holding up two turkey legs — a.k.a. his drum sticks.
This is an officially licensed book from Paul’s estate. Released in March, “Drumming Up An Appetite” quickly hit the top of Amazon’s heavy metal book charts.
As the publisher notes state, “Vinnie Paul continues to be one of the most beloved personalities in the history of metal and now his legacy can fill both our hearts and bellies with the perfect companion for your summer barbecue.”
