Strong winds, flooding, hail, tornadoes possible
DETROIT – Accumulating snowfall and two rounds of severe storms are possible for Southeast Michigan on Wednesday, and some of those storms come with the risk of hail, flooding, and tornadoes.
Rain-snow mix overnight
Rain and snow are both in the forecast overnight.
It appears a light rain will move in shortly after midnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning.
As temperatures drop in the early morning, the rain will change over to snow for some of the area. It appears those north of I-96 will receive snow, especially north of M-59.
This rain-snow mix will continue until around 7 a.m. or 8 a.m. Wednesday, and then it should end.
Some accumulation is possible, but with temperatures rapidly rising on Wednesday, it won’t last. Areas north of M-59 could see a trace of snow, while north of I-69 could even get over an inch.
First round of storms Wednesday
It appears there will be two primary rounds of storms on Wednesday, with the first coming around lunchtime.
Severe weather is possible during this round of storms.
Severe weather Wednesday night
The second round of storms on Wednesday arrives after sunset and should exit by midnight.
This round has a better chance of bringing severe weather. Strong, damaging winds are the greatest concern.
Flooding is also a concern, as some spots could see near 2 inches of total rain. Most of the area will get around 1 inch of rain.
The hail and tornado threats are lower than the wind and flooding threats, but they can’t be ruled out.
Southeast Michigan is split between an enhanced risk (level 3 of 5) and a slight risk (level 2 of 5).
We’ve declared a 4Warn Weather alert for Wednesday due to the threat of those storms becoming severe.
More rain this weekend
Another rainstorm is in the forecast for this weekend, with chances looking better Tuesday compared to Monday’s models.
Plan to see showers Saturday, and they could continue into Sunday.
More snow early next week
On the back side of the weekend’s system, temperatures will drop. Highs next week are near 40 degrees.
With a flow off the lakes, some lake-effect snow showers or flurries are possible.
