“First they came for the immigrants, and I did not speak out…”
— Inspired by Martin Niemöller
In a major victory for civil rights, a federal appeals court has upheld a block on Donald Trump’s attempt to use the Alien Enemies Act to deport immigrants—even those here legally, without criminal records. But this isn’t just about immigration.
This is about the dangerous expansion of executive power, the manipulation of fear, and a legal weapon that could one day be turned on anyone the government labels an “enemy.”
🧨 The Alien Enemies Act: A Relic of Authoritarianism
The Alien Enemies Act, passed in 1798, allows the president to detain or deport non-citizens from nations the U.S. is at war with. It was written in an era of powdered wigs and wooden teeth—and it has no place in a modern democracy.
Trump attempted to resurrect this dusty piece of authoritarian legal machinery to target immigrants from Muslim-majority countries, even those who had committed no crimes and were living in the U.S. legally.
The ACLU successfully challenged this move in court, and a recent ruling affirms that this gross overreach violates basic constitutional protections.

🚫 “Legal” Immigrants Caught in the Crossfire
According to a PBS NewsHour report, migrants with no criminal history and full legal status were swept up in Trump’s broader crackdown. These were people with:
- Valid visas
- Green cards
- Pending asylum claims
- No criminal records
Innocent families, students, and long-term residents were harassed, detained, and in some cases deported—all under the pretense of “national security.”
This wasn’t about protecting America. This was about scapegoating, fear-mongering, and building a political brand on cruelty.
🧠 The Bigger Picture: When Fear Replaces Freedom
This is what authoritarianism looks like in the 21st century:
- Old laws reinterpreted to serve new power grabs
- Executive orders that sidestep Congress
- Weaponizing words like “alien,” “invasion,” or “enemy” to justify mass surveillance and deportations
When the government can arbitrarily label entire communities as “enemies,” the door opens to mass violations of civil liberties.
And here’s the truth most people miss:
What starts with immigrants doesn’t stop with immigrants.
🧩 Who Benefits?
Let’s connect the dots.
🟢 The billionaire class profits from division—fearful people are easier to manipulate, distract, and control.
🟢 Authoritarian politicians use “tough on immigration” stunts to win votes while quietly undermining your rights.
🟢 Enemies of democracy—both foreign and domestic—cheer every time we erode our own constitution in the name of “safety.”
🛑 What Happens If We Don’t Speak Up?
- That neighbor with a green card could disappear.
- That student from Iran might be detained on arrival.
- Your rights to due process, free speech, or protest could be next.
History shows this clearly:
Rights are rarely stolen all at once—they are chipped away, group by group, silence by silence.
🗣️ Now Is the Time to Push Back
We applaud the courts and the ACLU for standing up—but the fight is far from over.
📢 We must demand:
- Permanent protections for legal immigrants and asylum seekers
- Sunsetting outdated laws like the Alien Enemies Act
- Oversight and accountability when executive power goes unchecked
- Compassion over cruelty, truth over fear, rights over rhetoric
